The thicker insulation ensures the fridge cycles less often, reducing power consumption while effectively keeping contents cold. Quality materials, craftsmanship, and a sturdy build are critical, ensuring the fridge withstands tough terrains and extreme conditions common during overlanding trips.

One of the major considerations for fridge performance is its power usage. A standard 12V compressor fridge draws about 1–6 Amps per hour, though on average, most units consume 2.5 Amps. Multiply this figure by hours of operation, and you’ll see the impact on your battery system.

  • Average daily consumption (running half a day): roughly 30 Amp-hours (2.5 Amps x 12 hours).
  • Deep-cycle lead-acid battery (105Ah): Usable power is about 50Ah (half the capacity).

Without recharging, this provides only 1–1.5 days of operation, as drawing excessively will damage the battery.

For extended off-grid adventures, lithium batteries are a superior option. They offer higher energy efficiency, maintain stable voltage levels, and allow deeper discharge compared to lead-acid alternatives. The downside? A significantly higher upfront cost.

12V outlet or dedicated system?

While most fridges can run on a car’s standard battery via a 12V outlet, this only works temporarily. A smart solution involves installing a dual-battery system with a secondary deep-cycle battery dedicated to the fridge. This setup reduces strain on the car’s cranking battery.

  • Pair this with a smart DC-to-DC charger to keep the battery fully topped up while driving.
  • Use solar panels as an additional power source when stationary.

Why lithium batteries excel

Lithium batteries provide longer-lasting power without compromising voltage levels. They can be discharged up to 80% without damaging the battery, allowing fridges to run longer without recharging.

Though more expensive, their durability and weight advantages make them ideal for frequent adventurers.

  • Plug your fridge into a 220V outlet at home to pre-cool it before leaving.
  • Freeze meats, drinks, and even water bottles beforehand to give your fridge a head start.

2. Insulation is key

  • Invest in a well-insulated cover to combat external temperature fluctuations.
  • Boost your fridge’s efficiency with DIY add-ons like placing EVA foam underneath or draping wet towels over it for additional evaporative cooling.

3. Placement and ventilation

  • Ensure the fridge’s ventilation fan has plenty of airflow by avoiding blocked spaces.
  • Use vehicle gullwing openings or ventilation flaps to expel trapped hot air.

Proper placement can dramatically reduce how often the fridge cycles.

4. Temperature management

  • Lower the temperature while driving (when the alternator is recharging the battery), and minimise opening the fridge when parked.

5. Keep it full

  • A full fridge with cold contents retains temperatures more effectively than one filled with warm air. Bottle cold water to fill gaps and reduce cycling frequency.

For overlanders carrying multiple food types, dual-compartment fridge freezers are a fantastic investment, reducing the need for separate coolers.

Not ready to splurge on a dual-zone model? You can still divide a standard fridge by carefully placing frozen items at the base and separating them with a custom divider. This DIY method allows item-specific temperature control.

1. Avoid direct sunlight

Always park your vehicle in shaded areas or use reflective covers to minimise fridge heating.

2. Organise contents

An organised fridge prevents long lid openings that release cooled air. Store frequently used items in accessible spots, and consider using a second backup chest for nightly drinks to reduce fridge cycles.
