Slimline 3 Roof Rack: What's New and What Fits

The Dometic Front Runner Series Slimline 3 is a new modular roof rack that sits lower, carries heavy loads with less flex and hides your wiring. You can also remove it without breaking the roof seal. It suits anyone who wants to build their setup around the roof, from a rooftop tent and awning to recovery boards and storage.

This guide explains what’s new, how to match the rack to the way you travel and which vehicles it’s available for.

What’s new on the Slimline 3?

Upgrade What it means for you
Lower profile (Dometic says 20% lower than the Slimline II) Less wind noise and better fuel economy on long drives
Stronger, stiffer slats Heavy loads with less flex on rough roads
Modular slats Add, remove or move slats without taking the rack apart
Hidden wiring channels Neat routing for lights and solar
Built-in tie-down points Straps attach at all four corners
Easy-release mounting Remove the rack without resealing the roof
Stainless steel build Made to last against rust and wear

Which Slimline 3 setup suits you?

Your situation What to add Best For
Weekend trips Storage boxes First-time rack buyers
Camping on the roof Rooftop tent and awning Multi-day trips
Sand and mud Recovery board and shovel mounts Self-recovery
Night or remote travel Lights and antenna mount Off-grid trips

Choose a simple setup if you’re just starting out

Fit the rack and add storage boxes to free up space inside the vehicle. Add more as you learn what you need. Our Beginner’s Guide to 4×4 Overlanding explains this approach.

Choose a camp setup if comfort matters most

Add a rooftop tent and an awning. The Quick Release Awning Mount and 270° Awning Mount are made for the Slimline 3, and there’s a Shower Arm too. Rooftop tents are heavy, so check your vehicle’s roof limit first. Still choosing? See our RT-4S vs RT-2S comparison.

Choose a recovery setup if you travel through sand or mud

The Recovery Board Side Mount Bracket and Spade or Shovel Mount keep your recovery gear within easy reach.

Choose a lighting setup if you drive after dark or off-grid

The hidden wiring makes it easy to add lights neatly. Try the Grab Handle / Light or the Antenna Mount. For more, see our guide to driving lights and light bars.

More accessories: Tap Extension Bracket, Grab Handle and Bottle Opener.

Which vehicles is the Slimline 3 available for?

What should you check before buying?

  • Your roof load limit. It’s often lower than people expect, especially on smaller vehicles.
  • The weight of what you’ll carry. Add up the tent, boxes, water and recovery gear.
  • Your exact vehicle and year. Our team can confirm fitment.
